Unblogged Bits (Fri. 13-May-11 1730)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. To my libertarian friends – A healthy society is not a landscape of all-against-all individuals. Nor is it a collectivist hive-mind in lockstep. There is, and should be, a tension between personal freedom and group responsibility, between individual liberty and obligation to our neighbors. There are indeed too many libertarians who are less interested in liberty than in license — and too many on the opposite end who are more interested in power (in great or in small things) than the commonwealth. Some sacrifices of freedom are worthwhile, others are anything but. A vigorous debate on the subject when it crops up seems a good idea.
  2. White House gives Romney bear/death hug on health care reform – Heh.
  3. George W. Bush Breaks His Silence On The Killing Of Osama Bin Laden – Dubya comes across as more gracious and level-headed than the current Republican punditry.
  4. How Robber Barons hijacked the “Victorian Internet” – “The horrific problems of the ‘Victorian Internet’ suggest that government overreach isn’t the only thing to fear. In 1876, laissez-faire ‘freedom for all’ meant (in practice) the freedom for Henry Nash Smith to read your telegrams if he didn’t like who you supported for President. It meant freedom for Associated Press to block criticism of Western Union, and even to put potential critics and competitors out of business. And it meant freedom for a scoundrel to hijack the system at his leisure.”
  5. [UPDATED with Sad Case Against Deportee:] Isaura Garcia, Battered Woman Facing Deportation, Embodies Problems with ICE Program – Orange County News – Navel Gazing – Excellent! Let’s make illegal immigrants even more scared of the police! Then abusers and crooks can make their lives a living hell with impunity and they’ll be so unhappy they’ll flee the US! It’s a win-win!
  6. Enjoying amusement parks with little kids – Overall good advice. Dealing with a kid who still needs (esp. after a few hours) a stroller or wagon, though, still works. From our experience, that is.
  7. The Treatment of a Gay Student at Messiah College – There’s shameful activity going on at Messiah College — and it’s not on Isaiah Thomas’ part.
  8. Botox at 8: What Are We Doing to Our Girls? – CBS MoneyWatch.com – Appalling. And destructive in more ways than one.
  9. Box Turtle Bulletin » Why We Won’t Link To Denver Post, Las Vegas Review-Journal, Salt Lake Tribune, and Several Others – Bloggers beware. And a fine example of Ghandi’s comment, “As in law so in war, the longest purse finally wins.”
