Unblogged Bits (Sun. 28-Aug-11 2330)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. How to tell if the weather is going to be a really big deal – The Oatmeal
  2. Live Blogging the Storm: Peter David
  3. Barda’s fist, Granny Goodness’ face. Who do you… – I could watch this all day.
  4. Behold child … Barda. Tony Bedard’s classic Barda… – This one’s for Katherine …
  5. Allen West Says The Palestinians Asking For Statehood Is Like Giving A State To The Appalachians – Actually, I’d much prefer to see a truly equal one-state solution. I’d also like a pony, and a rocket ship … and, regardless, I’m sure that West would object to a fully equal one-state solution.
  6. Ceremonial Deism – I’ve long been generally tolerant of ceremonial deism, both as a traditionalist, and because, of course, the ceremonial deism of the US is in line with my own belief system. But it’s becoming clear to me that the danger of ceremonial deism is not ceremonial deism per se, but the extent to which it is used as a club for sectarian (and authoritarian) purposes. Or, to put it another way, Christianists argue in courts that Christian-based ceremonial deism is merely a common social tradition … then turn around and argue that it proves that we are, in fact, a particular sectarian society and that anyone who doesn’t toe their religious line is simply not being a True American. In short, they are spoiling it for everyone (as the least of their sins).
  7. Pastor Mike has a plan – Appalling. Maybe some mandatory cloth badge would be helpful, too. If it comes to that, I’d be pleased to do an “I’m Spartacus” and stand alongside a minority being identified solely for the purpose of persecution and prejudice.
  8. JREF Brings Pressure to ‘Psychic’ Frauds – Good for them.
  9. Lawsuit: Background-Check Service Incorrectly Reporting People As Sex Offenders – Because if everyone’s in a big set of databases, everything will be skittles and cream, because, we all know, databases and data relationships are always error-free and benign.
  10. Bias lighting and your computer monitor: $13 for more comfortable gaming – Need to ponder this both for our PCs and maybe for our TV.
  11. Shroud of Turin Not Jesus’, Tomb Discovery Suggests
  12. What’s The Difference Between a Sack Lunch & a Recently Beating Heart? – It’s a wonder any of us survived.
  13. Three Charts To Email To Your Right-Wing Brother-In-Law – “These things really matter. We all want to fix the terrible problems the country has. But it is so important to know just what the problems are before you decide how to fix them. Otherwise the things you do to try to solve those problems might just make them worse.”
  14. Why Was This Atheist Billboard Rejected by EMC Outdoor in Knoxville? – Scary thoughts are “too controversial”!
  15. Jim DeMint Staffer Mocks Flash Flood Warnings – What is wrong with these people?
