Unblogged Bits (Tue. 30-Aug-11 1730)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Kristen Stewart in the upcoming Snow White film (Universal… – Snow White is … heiress to the Throne of Gondor?
  2. Facts about paper clips – I seem to recall a really fascinating tale of the development of the paper clip — and how companies keep coming up with more expensive alternatives that don’t work as well. Like, say, ACCO … And one element in that is that people don’t want expensive paper clips, and, in most cases, don’t really want “very fun” paper clips, either.
  3. Fox Business Host Accuses Bill Nye of ‘Confusing Viewers’ with Science – Shorter Payne: “I’m confused, so our viewers must be.”
  4. Grudge Report – Need to remember this bit of passive-aggressiveness. 🙂
  5. Showtime to Develop Steven Spielberg-Produced Stephen King TV Series Adaptation ‘Under The Dome’ – Not a new concept, by any means, but it could be interestingly done.
  6. Fischer: Public Prayers Should “Be Reserved For Christians And Jews” – Thanks, Bryan … I’ve been getting a hankering for another “Bryan Fischer is a Dolt” post for a while …
  7. Barber: Gays Want To Put Conservatives “Behind Bars” – Projecting much, Matt?
  8. Ray Comfort is a fraud – (Rolls eyes.)
  9. It’s Video Game Competition, Not Violence, That Sparks Aggression [Science] – Interesting. Certainly worth further study.
  10. Fox News: Is Rick Perry Dumb? And Does It Matter? – I’m progressively less and less confident on his cognitive skills (and willingness to use them) as time goes on. And, yes, Megyn, it does matter, if we’re talking about a candidate for President of the United States.
  11. House Republican Bill Cuts Hurricane Monitoring Funds That Help Save Millions Of Dollars – I’m sure that if these are of value to corporate America that someone will found a company that provides for-profit hurricane hunting, right? Right? I mean, that’s the American way, right? Right?
  12. Hurricane hunter program could face budget cuts – Florida Wires – MiamiHerald.com – Sometimes the actions of the GOP plow straight past parody into flabbergastment.
  13. Justice Ginsburg: If I Were Nominated Today, My Women’s Rights Work For The ACLU Would Probably Disqualify Me – Without a doubt.
  14. Has Homeland Security spending paid off since Sept. 11? – latimes.com – “So if your chance of being killed by a terrorist in the United States is 1 in 3.5 million, the question is, how much do you want to spend to get that down to 1 in 4.5 million?” Apparently about $75 billion a year. And, yes, some of that equipment is being used for other, non-terror-related things … but that’s not what it was bought for or what the justification was for funding it. Which begs the question of who’s setting the priorities, and on what basis, and is a $200K armored assault vehicle more important to the nation than $200K in computer equipment for a school?
