Unblogged Bits (Thu. 15-Sep-11 2330)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Mugshots of Amish who won’t put orange triangles on their buggies – “We’ve been spending most our lives / Living in an Amish paradise.” — “Weird” Al Yankovic
  2. Barton Suggests Thomas Jefferson’s Affair With Sally Hemings Was A Liberal Conspiracy – David Barton is a dolt.
  3. Fischer Wants Departments of Education, Transportion, Agriculture, and HHS Eliminated – What’s fundamentally telling here is that Fischer is couching it in “moral” terms — that being constitutional or unconstitutional is a “moral” question. It most emphatically is not.
  4. Endorsing Candidates From The Pulpit Does Not Make You Dietrich Bonhoeffer – You are free to support specific candidates from the pulpit … at which point you are free to be treated as a political organization, not a tax-exempt charitable one.
  5. Iconic Dogs in the Media – Vaguely appalling that “Scooby-Doo” the Movie has outgrossed “101 Dalmations” (which is also a very entertaining book).
  6. 1937: AP claims blondes are “much more dangerous” drivers – Boing Boing – That’s it! Kay doesn’t get to drive until she’s 30.
  7. Republicans Push New $1 Trillion Tax Cut Windfall for the Wealthy – There’s little to no evidence that tax cuts to “job creators” (the wealthy) actually get substantially invested in jobs. Unless one counts the yacht industry, the executive jet industry, the catering industry, the landscaping industry …
  8. BBC News – Sri Lanka Buddhist monks destroy Muslim shrineSigh.
  9. Feds wrongly raid home of CBS correspondent – Lovely.
  10. Rice Fields of Japan – Very cool.
  11. Get a closer look
  12. Comment: The Palestinians’ illegitima… JPost – Opinion – Op-Eds – Rick Perry writes an op-ed in the Jerusalem Post about how Israel and Texas are so much alike, esp. since they are beset by “enemies.” Crikey.
  13. Could ‘Obamacare’ Have Saved Ron Paul Staffer’s Life? | ThinkProgress – Excluding pre-existing conditions is understandable if insurance was solely the “shared risk” system that it originally was. Now it’s the only way to pay for adequate health care, which means the for-profit anything-goes model is (societally) obsolete.
  14. FBI says training lecture critical of Islam ended – I’m glad it’s “ended.” It’s remarkable how much of this kind of material turns up, all of which it turns out is “no longer used.” Which makes one wonder what it’s then replaced with.
  15. MOST POPULAR INFOGRAPHICS | Flickr – Heh.
  16. BREAKING: U.S. Supreme Court Grants Stay of Execution To Duane Edward Buck | ThinkProgress
  17. Texas Man To Be Executed Today Despite Trial Testimony That Blacks More Likely To Be Violent | ThinkProgress – It seems (there is some conflicting word) that SCOTUS has granted a stay of execution, after Perry (of course) did not. Which Perry will, of course, tout as proof of the success of the “Texas system” …
  18. Amanda Waller: A unique presence in comics – DC is doing some good stuff with the rebooted New Universe … but they’re doing it in the context of fanboyz-turned-publishers, of which the “new look” for Amanda “the Wall” Waller is the latest (but not least) example. Dolts.

  1. 18. AARGH! Amanda Waller was one of my favorite supporting characters (see my letter in Adventures of Superman #598). Now they turn her into some pubescent boy’s fantasy> Gah!

I agree with everything in that article. I’d also add that C. C. H. Pounder would have made a good live action Waller as well as providing the perfect voice for her in the cartoons. Just look at her character on Warehouse 13.

I wonder how much of DC’s “new direction” is going to be about homogenizing unique characters. Oracle, Amanda Waller… I am sorely disappointed.

  2. I wonder how much of DC’s “new direction” is going to be about homogenizing unique characters.

The more I consider it, the more I think it’s about (a) trying desperately to save DC comics by (b) publishing the comics that Dan DiDio and Jim Lee (et al.) wanted to read when they were 14.

Which isn’t the worst of strategies by any means … if you’re starting from a blank slate. Which is why they’ve created blank slate, or whitewashed over the top of the slate they already had.
