Unblogged Bits (Thu. 27-Oct-11 1130)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Angry Birds: Not as Fun in Real Life
  2. All the Doctors in Whoville…
  3. Architizer Blog » Steve Jobs Grew Up in a Modernist Home – I’ve always thought Eichler homes were very cool to see, but perhaps not very practical — especially lacking any ceiling insulation (or window/wall insulation), and having relatively flat roofs that don’t deal with excess rain (let alone snow) very well. But they’re cool to look at.
  4. Orange County city council unanimous: Occupy tents are a form of speech – Well, that’s unexpected in the OC … unless they’re considering the matter as true conservatives, respecting the right to speech and assembly (whether you agree with the speakers/assemblers or not).
  5. Herman Cain’s Staff Told “Do Not Speak To Him Unless You Are Spoken To” – An example of why business folk don’t always make good politicians or political leaders. While a business exec can possibly get away without letting the hoi polloi chat with him, a politician (esp. the President) cannot.
  6. Already? First Image of the Motorola Droid 4 Leaks – Linked to only to note I just realized I’m only 7 months away from my 2 year “refresh” on my existing phone. Time flies, indeed.
  7. ABC News Still Fumbling Fisker Automotive Story – Dolts.
  8. ACT! Demands Donations To Fight Imaginary Sharia Invasion – Because Jesus was all about giving money to the … folks worried about Samaritan law invading the Holy City of Jerusalem, or something. Right? I mean, there’s something about Samaritans there in the Bible, from what I recall, that must be it.
  9. Would You Use Dollar Coins if It Saved the Government $5.6 Billion? [Government] – “why do Americans dislike the dollar coin?” Because it’s different. Because they use bills and there’s no immediate benefit to using them. Indeed, there might even be a small inconvenience. Plus, given the spin given to the half-hearted efforts in the US to date, it smacks vaguely of THE GUBBIMENT IS TAKING AWAY MY RIGHT TO DOLLAR BILLS or something. So the answer is to simply stop making dollar bills. Period. Then the coins will, over time, perforce be used. Problem solved.
  10. Those poor persecuted Christians – Again and again, we see the issue of folks who consider their practices and opinions to be the “norm,” and so don’t see why anyone else of a different opinion or belief should be offended — indeed, who see maintenance of their particular norm as being a matter of “freedom”. It’s not so much malice (in most cases) as unaware ignorance and confusion.
  11. We Are All Strapping Young Bucks Buying T-Bones Now – Ryan is worried about our social safety net becoming “a hammock that ends up lulling people into lives of dependency and complacency which drains them of their incentive and the will to make the most of their lives”? Obviously he hasn’t tried to make a budget while living on existing levels of social security, or food stamps, or other such stopgaps.
  12. Fox News Grasps at Next Straw to Attack #OWS… ACORN! – “Grasping at Acorns” … I love it.
  13. SOPA: US House of Reps copyright bill proposes national censorship, attacks on hosting services, Twitter, YouTube – Leaving aside the whole “Twitter is threatened” stuff, this is just stupid-bad policy. Even if the IP issues are as dire as described, it’s really a case of the (very well-monied) tail wagging the dog to impose this sort of process.
  14. Mississippi’s shame – In the words of LBJ (a man who knew a lot about lawmaking, good and bad): “You do not examine legislation in the light of the benefits it will convey if properly administered, but in the light of the wrongs it would do and the harms it would cause if improperly administered.” Anyone who thinks this bill will not be used by someone, somewhere in Mississippi to do all the things that the official supporters say it would never, ever be used for … well, I have a nice bridge in a swamp to sell you.
  15. Now, the American Cancer Society is Just Lying… – ACS is seriously shooting themselves in the foot here. Even if one takes them at their word (which is a bit of a stretch), they’re letting their internal rules drive them into damaging their public image.
  16. Brad Bird Talks ‘Incredibles 2;’ Willing to Make a Sequel, But Only With the Right Story – Good answer (on both counts).
  17. Rick Perry May Bow Out Of Future Debates – To be fair, the GOP has been putting on a bucket-load of debate this campaign season (and thus continuing to provide coverage to marginal candidates who have little hope of getting out of their polling doldrums). I’m not surprised Perry (et al.) are getting a bit tired of it.

  1. 13) Some day one of these things will be made law in some Bible Belt state and we will get to see just how the citizens there like it. Maybe the vast majority of Mississippians would be fine with this law. Doubt it.

  2. The problem being, it’s not so egregious a law as to really turn electoral politics (nobody’s going to get booted out of office because they voted for this sort of claptrap), and the support for it is not popular but financial.

  3. I’ll leave it as an exercise for the readers whether anyone will be inspecting the bathrooms or prescription records of the rich and powerful in Mississippi for birth control …

  4. I think a lot of the anti-abortion true believers would be happy to go after the rich and powerful. The R&P would have to do as they did in the old days: schedule medical vacations in Europe or Japan. The middle class can make do with Mexico, also as of old.

    1. Perhaps they would, and perhaps (mindful of donations) they wouldn’t. But, regardless, I have little doubt that the pols and wealthy will somehow manage to get hold of contraception and abortion services as they choose, public rhetoric notwithstanding.
