This is lovely. In a horrific kind of way. (via +Neil Gaiman) #ddtb

Oldest and Fatherless: The Terrible Secret of Tom Bombadil
(This is another of my speculative pieces and nothing to do with Star Wars. This one is for an older trilogy.) Old Tom Bombadil. Possibly the least liked character in The Lord of the Rings. A childish…
While I take issue with the idea that there was anyone happy with his exclusion, I like the dark twist immensely.
Love it.
Was Bombadil fat? In LotRo he’s fairly slim.
@Avo – Yeah, I see that. The physical descriptions in the book don’t really go into it — he’s bigger than a hobbit, shorter than the Big Folk. My impression may be from the Hildebrandt painting http://www.theonering.com/images/medialibrary/bombadil010607a.jpg which portrays him as kind of stocky.
That was interesting, although it won’t change my liking for the character, whom I did miss when I watched the movies. I’ve read all the books several times, and don’t recall him being described as fat. I always thought he was a nature spirit, and like nature, his outlook on good and evil would not be the same as would that of human, elf, or hobbit.
@Ellie – Well, he implied he was a nature spirit … but, then, looking at the nature around him, that isn’t terribly comforting.
I missed Tom from the movies as a completist, and also because he provides a narrative link (through the Barrow-downs) to the Numinorian weapons that Merry and Pippin use (and thus to the final battle with the Witch King before Minas Tirith). But aside from that, it would be a 20-30 minute side journey in the movie, and probably (even at their length) not worth it to do; the plotty bits Jackson managed to address decently.
