The Battle Over School Prayer and Why It Matters

Just would like to add now that Mr. Gingrich has found his spiritual home in the RCC, he might like to do some research on things like the Philadelphia Bible wars, and what happened to RC children who refused (in many localities) to say Protestant prayers, or read from Protestant Bibles. He might also learn about the priest who objected to enforced Protestantism (somewhere in New England and I’m sorry that I’ve forgotten where — I’m old) who was tarred and feathered. Others might be surprised to learn that in all the years I attended school back in the Dark Ages, only one teacher began the day with prayer: The Lord’s Prayer. Because it was a majority RC neighborhood, she would always say, “Now, all you Protestants, you just add your ending. You don’t have to stop with the rest of us.” Why any person of faith would want people who are strangers to their families, teaching their children about religion is beyond me.

It is noteworthy how mainstream Catholicism has become in this country, that Catholic leaders (and Catholic politicians) are willing to side with evangelical Protestants who, a century ago, would have been their Know-Nothing opponents, accusing them of popery and Jesuitical plots and the like.
And, of course, a few centuries before that, it was the evangelicals and Baptists who were being persecuted and jailed and tarred and feathered for their particular beliefs.
