The pink ribbon is looking a little yellow

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure charity will no longer be giving grants to Planned Parenthood of America for breast exams. They claim it's because of "new rules" they've set up about giving grants to organizations under investigation (the House GOP have an ongoing investigation into PPA in an attempt to find some sort of dirty laundry).

My guess is that SGK is feeling the pressure from right-wing groups that had been threatening boycotts against it because of the grants it gave to PPA — grants that, of course, didn't go to (gasp) abortion services but that helped pay for breast examinations and the like — but which were somehow tainted by the big finger-pointing EEEEVVVILLLL rhetoric from anti-abortion forces.

Next time someone asks me for a contribution to a For the Cure race, I'll donate that money to PPA instead. #ddtb

  1. I don't like SGK…they have a lot of rules as far as how to link to them from your own blog…You aren't allowed to say anything but Susan G. Koman for the Cure if you link to them or talk about them in anyway otherwise they get pissed off and threaten all kinds of stuff. I don't think highly of people who ask for donations and recognition, but then put restrictions on it.

  2. I've heard a number of negative things about SGK, in the past, but I was impressed by their fund-raising efforts for their cause and by their doing things like offering grants to orgs like PPA despite the flack they caught.

    Oh, well.

  3. Yea, well..there are a lot of other orgs that are deserving of funding…I just remember them because when my Aunt was dying of breast cancer I was doing a little research into some of them and just what they had on their website really turned me off to them. This is just one more thing for me not to like them.
