There'd been some indications that the whole culture wars / social conservatism thing was supposed to go a bit into the background this election cycle. Instead, it was all going to be about the economy for the GOP.
But … the economy's actually, slowly, improving. And as the string of zany challengers to Mitt Romney have shown, there's still a very active, vocal fringe of the GOP base (the types the come out for caucuses and primaries) who want to fight that battle.
But is that how they can actually win the general election? Some Republicans are warning that getting all fired up about denying contraception coverage in the name of religion isn't the way to win in November. #ddtb
