I have never understood the appeal of steampunk.
@Avo – Hard to say. There’s a certain design aesthetic that values craftsmanship and polish (of wood or brass). Part of it is a displaced nostalgia — just as you or I looked ahead at the Jetsons, Victorian and Edwardian folks looked at steam and lighter-than-air craft and the Industrial Revolution as the model for the future. There’s a certain elegance (amidst the soot) to the era as well that garners some admiration.
Also, it’s kinda goofy in a retro-pulp way.
