Letting doctors lie for the "greater good"

An increasing number of states are letting doctors off the hook from malpractice suits if they fail to tell their patients about prenatal conditions that might lead to a woman legally choosing to abort. "No, nothing wrong with the amnio or the ultrasound …" Disgusting.

"Despite the rhetoric of anti-abortion politicians about how all these restrictions are necessary to ensure that women's decisions are well-informed, it's never been about that. Doctors who provide abortions already work hard to ensure that every woman has the information she needs to make the best decision for herself and her family. What these bills are about is politicians who think they know better than women and who are trying to impose their own views on abortion on a woman and her family regardless of the circumstances …"

Kansas to Pregnant Women: "A Little Lie from Your Doctor Won't Hurt You"
It's what every pregnant woman I know dreads. Going into that big ultrasound, having the ultrasound tech, who had been so chatty, suddenly go silent. Having her do sweep after sweep across your belly without saying another word, until finally, she gets up and solemnly says, "I am going to get the doctor."
As far as pregnancy nightmares go, I thought that was one of the worst. But now politicians in Kansas are giving pregnant women and their partners something new to worry about. Buried in a s…

  1. They’re only thinking of her, they’re only thinking of her,
No matter what they say or do, they’re only thinking of her!
and you really don’t want me to finish this verse.

The letter I wrote the legislator:
If you say that we’re only doing this for the good and the health of the woman and family involved in the very difficult decision to end a pregnancy for whatever reason, you are in essence practicing medicine without a license, and lying through your teeth. You are interfering in the doctor-patient relationship and confidentiality, and you are claiming to medical authority which you patently do not have.

You would deny a family, by immunizing from prosecution a physician who, opposing abortion, withholds, lies, or otherwise misrepresents any necessary medical information on the health or lack thereof of the fetus, makes it impossible for that family to prepare themselves for life with the child-to-come, or end what is known will not be a successful pregnancy with a healthy live birth at the end of it.

That is despicable, and violates the oath physicians take that starts “First, do no harm…”. That setup is very clearly harm–much more, and more serious, harm than any abortion could cause, and the harm to your soul, and the souls of those who would pass and endorse this bill in any state,is so much greater.

I hope that none of you who are pressing for this bill to pass ever have to face that situation. How many people, in utero, pregnant, or recently born have to die horribly before you realize the shortcomings in your thinking?

Your Jesus would condemn you for this kind of lawmaking. It is not a woman’s mental health and physical well-being that concerns you, it is your power to keep her under your control, and that is not moral, good law, nor any kind of medicine.

    Please stop this legislation NOW.

  2. if doctors can lie to the patient about tsts that they paid for, then patients can certainly lie about paying the bill. and if the gov passes this lying law, then citizens can lie about paying their taxes.
[ i just happened to see this cuz i got a petition to sign against this bill from ACLU. i thot that aclu was exaggerating! go sign the petition and stop this insane brownback jerk.]
