On the Naming of Names

While we did do a bit of glancing at baby name books when Katherine was born, we decided early on that we weren't going to strive for unusual, unique, trendy, or invented.* We chose a name we liked, that had many nickname possibilities, and a middle name that was slightly more unique and shared between both our families.

No regrets whatsoever.

  1. I had the name for my son picked out when I was a young teen. When we had my son I didn't even look at names as I had one picked – Aidan. After he was born I realized I probably should have checked as I kept getting asked if I named my son after a character in Sex in the City. I love my son's name…but I hate he will be one of a great many (Aidan was very popular for many years for babies). Sigh

With my daughter we went with something more traditional – Lily – and it appears that once again it is a fairly popular name though not one of the first 5 like Aidan was for so many years.

One of the things I love about my name is it is pretty rare, though not unknown. I have only ever known or known of 5 other Sandy's in my entire life. Oh well. 🙂

  2. Whereas, +Sandy L., it was a popular name when I was growing up — maybe one a class.

The one spot of luck we had namewise was that we had decided in advance what to name a girl, but had not come to a conclusion (or even anything half-satisfying) together on boy's name. To my relief, she was a girl. 🙂

We had the genders opposite yours in the same statement.
