But, jeez, some TV show concepts are so bound up in the personality and presentation of the person who created the role that it seems like idiocy to try and do a remake.
Ah, right, I was talking about Hollywood … #ddtb

Universal Develops ‘The Rockford Files’ For Vince Vaughn To Play James Garner Role
IMDb: The biggest, best, most award-winning movie site on the planet.

I actually think as a culture we are spoiled by the replay-ability of movies. In theater, parts are replayed and reinterpreted by different actors all the time. Nobody complains because that isn't the "original" Romeo on stage. I'm not saying all movies are Shakespeare quality, but a good story deserves to be retold many different ways. So I've stopped being bothered by remakes because they are a tradition that dates back to the origins of theater itself.
That’s what I said when this project first surfaced over a year ago. The role was written for James Garner! I can’t imagine that using the name of the original series is going to increase the audience, as fans of Garner’s show are almost certain to be disappointed by the new one. Better, I think, to create a new character and market it as being “in the style of” or “inspired by” The Rockford Files.
Two words for this…..Boy and Cott…..heh.
Seriously, though, you hit the nail on the head Dave….I can't see anyone but Jim Garner playing Rockford
+Jesse Butler, your point is well-taken — though certain roles are often known for key talent that played them or who won Tony's for them during their initial Broadway run.
I think I'm less bothered by movies that do this than by remakes of TV shows. Part of it is simple nostalgia — I know who Jim Rockford is like, having grown up with him. Part of it is that the role was played for many, many, many hours across multiple seasons and many stories, and that's a difference between a remake of a movie or of a stage production. Indeed, in the case of a movie remake of a TV show, one wonders why they simply don't call it something else, riffing off the theme but not trying to evoke the original portrayal.
Okay, probably most of it is nostalgia.
+Mark Means, I wouldn't call it a "boycott" if I never planned on going in the first place. 🙂
