The Marine air unit, when formed in WWII, was known as the "Werewolves." In 1958, when they were flying F8 Crusaders, they were redubbed the "Crusaders." Going over to Iraq in 2008, the unit commander at the time took the original name back — figuring that, y'know, it probably sent the wrong message to Muslims in the country we were ostensibly helping to have jets emblazoned with a giant red Crusader cross flying overhead.
And now the new unit commander, Lt. Col. Wade Wiegel, has decided to revert the name, and the insignia, supposedly reflecting the "heritage" of the unit. Which, honestly, strikes me as a bit disingenuous. #ddtb
