States should get to do what they want! Except when we don't want them to!

States should get to do what they want! Except when we don't want them to!

The GOP loves complaining that the Federal Government dictates too many things to dates in relation to health care money provided though programs like Medicaid. GOP House-proposed HR 4160, the "State Health Flexibility Act" would end that horrid mess by turning Medicaid into block grants, basically giving them the money without all the federal strings.

Block grants for Medicaid are a bad idea for a variety of reasons, but HR 4160 also includes Hyde Amendment strings for the states. Currently 17 states provide state funding for abortion; since the block grant money would go into the general state health care coffers, HR 4160 extends the Hyde Amendment — which prohibits any federal spending to provide abortions — to the states.

Because, of course, states should be allowed to do what they want, unless it's something that the GOP base doesn't like (abortions, gay marriage, etc.), in which case it should clearly be made illegal.
