Nation of Prudes

Should it make any difference to anyone if a former porn star reads a children's story to first graders? She wasn't advertised as a porn star. She didn't read a pornographic tale to the kids. There was no stripping involved, or other pornographic acts.

So what were the parents who complained about it worried about? Porniness rubbing off on their tots? Little Suzie looking her up on Wikipedia and deciding to be just like her favorite children's book reader? Little Johnny saying, "Hey, I saw Daddy watching your movie the other night?" The idea of a "fallen woman," even one with a new, non-porn career, daring associate with Our Children?

Weird and disturbing country we live in.

  1. I have no problem with porn. And I have no problem with porn stars, as long as they aren't trashy about it. I would trust a non-trashy porn star to teach my children or read to my children, etc. Even if they're still doing porn.

  2. Trashiness is, of course, in the eye of the beholder.

I care a lot about the folks who have contact with my children in schools. But I base that concern on what they're actually doing in the classroom, not what they're doing at home, on vacation, what they did in college, whatever. I don't ask about their political opinions, I don't ask about their sexual orientation, I don't ask about whether they turned tricks or shot pornos or were lawyers or hedge fund managers or politicians or nuns or hospice workers. I ask about what they are teaching to my kid today.

  3. I’m with Dave on this. When I discovered that a porn-parody of ST:TNG was being filmed, I watched some of the interviews (and a couple of brief scenes). The actors were all Trekfen, and apparently not airheads.

I think I’d rather have some porn actors read to a class than certain politicians, some former presidents included. On the other hand, Obama did a great job on Where the Wild Things Are, reading to a group of kids on (maybe) the WH lawn. It’s what you might expect from a politician who can actually speak English and be entertaining.
