The idea that, in most species (though, oddly, not with contemporary humans), sexual selection is based on gaudy, sexy males mating with as many females as possible … may not be actually supported by the original theories that put the idea forward.
(And, regardless, doesn't explain the human paradigm of sexy-sexy females being the visible focus of Homo sapiens sexual display.)
