Since then, SDCC became Hollywood south, with all the studios clamoring to show off their blockbuster geektastic films, in order to build geek stree cred before movie releases.
But something odd has become to happen. Not only has Hollywood noticed that big acclaim at SDCC doesn't guarantee box office success, but that the reverse is true: bad press from SDCC can cast a pall on upcoming films. The result seems to be a bit more playing it safe, even if the Big Venues at SDCC remain last-chopper-from-Saigon big-queue affairs.

Hollywood Acts Warily at Comic-Con, Fearing Bad Publicity
To avoid potentially negative press, Peter Jackson showed footage from his coming “Hobbit” film in a conventional format, instead of the boundary-pushing format the movie will use in theaters.
