BBC commentators are supposed to be neutral, but its always fun when they get carried away, though they apologise after. Sometimes they show a clip of the commentary box when, during the race, the commentators have been excited and have been recorded without them realising. Unsurprisingly during the current ‘Gold rush’ on the rowing and cycling they commentary has been rather excitable.
I don’t blame a commentator for getting excited about a medal, as long as they are generous to other nations, and would praise them the same: In the cycling the womens pursuit had gone to the final by breaking their WR for the 5th time, and a commentator said other nations turned up to see who would get silver. I hope (and I think I’ve heard) a BBC commentator say something similar about a dominant competitor of another nation.
Some classic loss of control moments.
Barry Davies, Seoul 1988 – Men’s hockey when the German defence were all over the place; “Where were the Germans, and frankly, who cares.”
Harry Carpenter – World Title fight, Frank Bruno vs Mike Tyson “Hit him Frank, Hit him.”
Test Match special is a good listen for a lesson in commentary. Because of the length of a cricket test match the commentators rotate, 2 on with one changing every 30-45 minutes. They usually have 2 commentators from the other nation, and all are very generous to each other (except Geoffrey Boycott if the other side are doing really badly, but he’s from Yorkshire, so doesn’t count.)
