Copying vs. Being Inspired By

Apple's exhibits in its suit vs. Samsung demonstrate that Samsung was certainly aware of Apple's iPhone work (duh), and compared its own in-development work with Apple's.  But what I see here is, "Hey, Apple has some great design elements here, so we should learn from them" rather than "Hey, Apple has a successful phone, let's copy it."
