+Kit Malone, I've solved more problems for people with that (and the accompanying "Have you rebooted?") than any other diagnostic technique. Though "Is it plugged in?" comes in a close second.
I have always found rebooting to “fix” a problem to be annoying. The recommendation feel lazy and the solution incomplete. The fact that it works doesn’t make me feel better about it.
Plugging something in is an embarrassing solution, but at least you know what was wrong.
Rebooting works because computers, like the human body, don’t exist in a state of perfection. It’s not satisfying, but neither is “take two aspirin and call me in the morning.”
As someone who has, himself, had to plug it (back) in … yes.
We just call Dave – it works every time!
