Development is frozen and nothing new is expected before the game shuts down toward the end of the year.
All the news I had heard about how the game's finances were going had been positive, so this is a surprise to say the least. It's not clear the specific factors behind NCSoft's decision — whether it was actual financial difficulties for the game, or just a change in focus.
This was my and Margie's first MMORPG, and though we've tried others we've always come back to it. The Dev community was great, and the expansion of content over the years kept things fresh and interesting. The increasingly wide array of powers also allowed us to mix things up so that even content previously played could be played again in a different way.
It was game that Margie and I spent a lot of time together on (arguably too much time, given what hour it sent us to sleep during the week, as often as not). We may find something new to take it its place, but it will never be the same.
I'm really quite sad about this.

That stinks. Though I haven't played in a long while, it was always a fun, solid game.
SO IT'S YOUR FAULT!!!!!
Just kidding.
No, really, it's — the more I think of it — very depressing. Like discovering your favorite golf course, where you've gone every week or two, and your favorite restaurant located at it where you proposed to your wife and spent time with your friends and family, is being shut down and turned into a WalMart.
Ugh.
Well, you’ve not tried SWTOR yet, and it’s going F2P, might be worth giving it a go.
Two players can do quite a bit without outside help in it.
Well, that’s a couple of recommendations for SWTOR.
Yeah, they lost me with the "Enhancement Diversification" thingy and I wasn't a fan of Jack Emmert (who, I heard, moved on a bit afterwards) I was a lifer until that came out. I'm always a sucker for superhero games.
I can imagine it is depressing and I'd probably feel the same if something like that happened to World of Warcraft.
Yeah.
ED was controversial, to say the least, but I think they managed to overcome the problems it caused later on. And Emmert did move on (and I ended up getting impacted by him on at least one other game).
Per IGN, NCSoft has announced 30 November as the formal shutdown point.
Which other game? Tabula Rasa?
Champions Online and Star Trek Online, both.
I too haz teh sad. It’s not just the loss of a video game, it’s the loss of a community. I’ve played pretty much weekly for the past 5 years with a group of friends and I don’t know what we’re going to do now.
:: sniffle ::
Let me know, Jae, what your group comes up with. My wife and I are looking for a new home to play in, and I’m certainly welcoming suggestions.
