The first years are hard years (much more than you know …)

… when you're Ann Romney.

I have no doubt that Mitt and Ann had financial worries in those days. I have no doubt that they were living a less-well-off life than both had growing up.

But, heck, there are a lot of people who pull themselves through difficult times with a lot less to eat than tuna noodle casserole. And who don't have the luxury of not working (to study and/or take care of the new kids) because  they have stock they can slowly cash in.

If the intent was to show they're "just plain folks" who can empathize with those who are out of work or barely making it paycheck-to-paycheck … it wasn't a very well-fulfilled intent, to my mind.
