Almost a third of non-Hispanic Americans think the majority of Hispanics are, in fact, illegal aliens / undocumented.
The real figure is more like 18%.
I wonder (rhetorically) why people have that number so wrong.

One In Three Americans Falsely Believe Most Latinos Are Undocumented
More than 30 percent of non-Hispanics inaccurately think that a majority of Latinos in the U.S. are undocumented, according to a new poll from the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) and Latino D…

+Dave Hill probably because they don't or want to speak english ????
Really? A third of all Histapnics don't (or don't want to) speak English? Really, +eDDie TK?
+Dave Hill well my wife is 4th generation (mexican) – now 4th generation – and they (the family) never speak english – …..her mother – 3rd generation can hardly speak any english ! my mother came over from italy – when she was like 10 and that side of my family "never" spoke italian !!!! they tried they're hardest to be american !
And I'll split the difference with the typical immigrant tale — my Italian great-grandmother spoke Italian and a smattering of English … my grandmother spoke English and Italian … my mother understands some Italian but only speaks English … and the only Italian I know are some impolite words I learned from my grandather.
So, anecdotal evidence aside, anything else you can muster to support the idea that a third of Hispanics don't / won't speak English?
+Dave Hill don't get me wrong and i'm a bit jealous of anyone that can speak more than one language – but you're here in colorado right ? well i'm up by greeley – that's all i hear when i'm in walmart – the park – just about anywhere – spainish or mexican spainish i guess you can call it – even my neighbors next door to me are form mexico – i can understand them not speaking it, but their daughter (about 20 years old) had a baby about 5 years ago – has a white american dad – the kid is as white as can be, but doesn't speak a word of english – this kid will enter our school system soon – i wonder what that will be like. i even have mexican's where i work tell me they their goal is to take back the lands that the U.S took in the illegal war – the mexican-american war – by vote – they say we (mexicans) where here first – i say no you weren't the native Americans where here first and the spainish murdered millions of them and stole their land and fortunes – that sure pisses them off. a country can't survive with two languages – imagine if every law written – road signs – school text books – not to mention having to hiring only teachers – police officers – city workers – the list goes on – that can speak both languages – etc etc etc – everything has to be in two languages ???? that would be a nightmare IMO one country – one language and anything thing else would be icing on the cake
+Dave Hill P.S. – i come from Boston – a huge melting pot – all kinds of ethnic groups, but what i saw back there is way different than what i see out here – i can understand wanting to hold onto some of your customs from the old country….but to blatantly ignore the customs of your new country just isn't right….kinda like a slap in the face – or the "showing of the back hand gesture"…….oh another weird thing – i lived in wyoming for 25 years and the largest illegal alien group up there is white ? but at least they spoke english……a funny sounding english i might add (LOL)
I'd suggest that in locations you have a large, homogenous group of immigrants (legal or not, but particularly the latter), there's going to be more of a tendency to stick with the mother tongue, out of solidarity.and comfort (and, yes, less incentive to change). Not anything particularly sinister or disdainful about it.
