Best cartoon ever. A pastiche of B-grade SF / Horror / Adventure films from the 30s and 40s, it was non-stop chills and thrills and there was a kid just like me, right there in the middle of it, learning Judo from a CIA agent in a cool red shirt and having a genius father who invented jet packs and alongside a mysterious friend who could do magic (Sim! Sim! Salabim!).
Sure, the plots and characters were horribly politically incorrect by modern standards (Pygmies! Arabs! Fiendishly Evil Oriental Mad Scientists!), but they got the adrenaline pumping and the heart racing. And, again, the Alex Toth designs, the Hoyt Curtain music, the solid voice artistry from the Hanna-Barbera stable (hey, isn't that bad guy Fred Flintstone?), and the thrill-a-minute bits overcame the limited (but generally heavily inked) animation.
Triffic stuff. Bought the DVDs as early as I could and raised my daughter on it. We still enjoy watching it.
