Honest Trailer: "Prometheus"

I was actually discussing this movie with someone yesterday. I wish I'd seen this first, since it sums up my feelings about the movie pretty well: very pretty, very pretentious, inutterably STOOPID.

  1. I wanted to se the movie in the first place to learn more about where the alien came from. That it turned out to be so hokey I can deal with, but the sheer awfulness of the story just gets worse every time I think about it.

And I try not to think about it.

  2. Um.
Logic flaws, plot holes, people acting stupidly…
    Alien, Aliens, Alien 3.
A large number of Scott’s other movies.

The flick’s trailers were not misleading.
It’s a sort-of prequel to movies with monsters who have molecular acid for blood, which they make out of people, plastic and metal…

Gorgeous, high-dollar popcorn movie. Just as I expected, only prettier.

    1. A1-3 certainly had their own flaws — though I really don’t think the characters tended to act quite as stupidly as the dunderheads in Prometheus. I think the difference was that the flick was envisioned (or at least advertised and filmed) as grand and profound and meaningful, and what we got was a really 3rd-rate “Monster in the haunted house” film with gorgeous settings and not much in the way of grandeur or profundity or meaning at all.

A1 was a tightly written and innovative horror film in space.

A2 was out and out adventure against endless hordes of bad guys.

A3 was … well, I had my own problems with A3, mostly thematic and as a follow-on to A2.

A-10 (I’ll set the count low because there’s at least one sequel in the works) tried to be existentially penetrating, and instead would have been hooted out of the theaters if it weren’t so just darned pretty.

  3. I love A1 and A2.
But: Facehugger falls off revealing something that looks suspiciously like an ovipositor was shoved down the crewman’s throat. Either do a really good scan or put him in stasis. Not, “He must be fine now!”

They notice that their primary weapons might damage the reactor. Retreat, go to Plan B. Dronebots or whatever. Not, “Damn the torpedoes!”

Granted, the idiocy in Prometheus was ongoing. But I was expecting idiocy and prepared to ignore it for neato moments and overall gorgeousness.
