John addresses an aspect of the debate that politicians who oppose abortion in case of rape may not have thought of. Or may not have thought of enough.
It's probably not as effective an argument as it should be, since ostensibly the key point of their position has to do with fetus, not the woman. But, on the other hand, that can let them handwave off the latter as they focus on the former. And that's what this essay is about.

That was disturbing, but probably the right way to make the point.
Agreed. I can't imagine actually writing something like that myself. Which, I suppose, is why John Scalzi is a very successful author, and I'm not.
