Very interesting. In this particular case, people who had been a customer at a site before (as detected by cookies) saw higher prices than apparent first-time visitors (versus the "expected" retail experience of getting a break for being a regular customer).
The ability of sites to know who you are, what you've bought, and offer up and price stuff accordingly, is something I expect we'll see more and more as time goes by … but as this shows, it's a real two-edged sword if people start trying to avoid being known to sites because of this sort of thing.

Have you ever wondered what kind of difference your browsing history can make when you shop? We were surprised to see this before/after photo that reader Dan sent. He tells us that he was shopping Hotwire for car rentals and took screen shots before and after he cleared out the cookies in his browser. It’s striking how different prices are when Hotwire thinks that he’s a new visitor who has never been to the site before.
