Civil Unions? That seems so 2005

It seems almost certain that a civil unions law will pass in the Colorado legislature this session.  Which is long past time due, and, to my mind, ought to be marriage (except for that pesky state constitutional amendment, dagnabbit).

So half a loaf — three-quarters even. Better than none?

  1. Luckily, in Colorado, that's pretty easy – Constitutional Amendments in Colorado don't mean what they probably should.

    Somehow we've got it worked out so that that's the easiest way to pass a law.

  2. Yeah, Colorado, like so many states, has let its constitution become a slightly-higher-bar legal mare's nest. In this case, it does serve the role that the amendment's proponent's sought, i.e., preventing a state court or the state legislature from doing anything about marriage equality.
