Well, the bad news is, dagnabbit, our DVR did not record the Doctor Who Christmas Special while we were away.
The good news is, Amazon Instant Video, available through our Blu-Ray, is able to serve it up to us for a mere $1.99. I plan on spending that. Though … not tonight.
(We've been playing catch-up using Amazon Instant Video on the Doctor with Katherine for a few seasons now — all of it, including a lot of classic Doctor, is available for free for Amazon Prime subscribers; the most recent full season, alas, is not free, but we haven't gotten there. Yet.)

The new season is only 5 eps. Counting the Xmas story, you would only spend $12 if you didn't get HD.
Right, Season 7 (had forgotten it was so short). Margie and I have seen it, so we just need to think of how to do it with Kay when we catch up to that point. We'll see.
BBC America might still be rerunning it. I've also been marathoning it on Amazon Prime (just about to start season 6), but I went ahead and recorded the new stuff when they reran it.
I should probably be looking for S7 stuff rerunning and DVR it — though the Amazon versions are the full-length ones without cuts for American commercials.
I am sure the Christmas special will rerun, but it wasn't showing up in the DVR schedule for the next few weeks and I want to watch it now.
Hmm, I hadn't thought about the cuts. The commercials on the Christmas special were kind of a pain.
I've gone back and forth at various times between broadcast TV and DVR/instant video. I'm finding the commercials (and their timing) to be increasingly irritating.
To me, the only benefit of watching it during the live broadcast is the shared experience of knowing thousands and millions of others are watching it, too. It's fun to live tweet, for example, and interact with other fans.
Once that's passed, then might as well get the amazon or itunes or googleplay version. If one has a way to watch it and can afford a few bucks (not always the case, I know), it's superior in every way to watching a version with commercials on someone else's timetable.
This is the nature of our on-demand culture when it comes to TV, and I like it. (the TV networks don't, though)
I don't watch live TV anymore, really. It's all DVR. I don't usually even stream that much, but since the Doctor Who stuff is free with Prime, we went that route instead.
It'll be free before too long. I was surprised with how quickly they made the previous Matt Smith seasons free.
We watch very little live TV in our house these days as well. It's either streamed or DVRed. Being that AT&T U-Verse still doesn't carry BBC America in HD I end up streaming the Doctor Who episodes.
We watch very, very little live TV — but DVRing live TV still means having to FF/jump through the commercials (and their interruptions and the cuts made for them).
And, yeah, it will be interesting to see how long before the Season 7 stuff goes for free, which is why I'm not sweating anything other than the current Christmas ep, which I missed.
Has the s07 stuff come out on BR yet? Probably it has, so they can sell the Christmas one separately and make a few extra bucks. Too bad, though, because with the stories go together and would be an easy box set.
On Amazon, at least, the S7 stuff is out, as a season set, but the Christmas Special is separate (or available as part of the "Matt Smith Christmas Specials" set).
It doesn't appear they are out on disc yet. That may be when Amazon will make them free for Prime subs.
