Because it's easier to mar and destroy than it is to preserve, and because human ego desires to leave a mark, no matter the cost to others. Not quite as awful an example as the Timbuktu destruction (http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/02/08/3223426/timbuktu-mausoleums-rebuilding.html), but of a kind to it.
