If we spirits have offended

We had a great time at "A Midsummer Night's Dream," put on by the Colorado Shakespeare Festival (http://www.coloradoshakes.org/) up in Boulder.  It was an excellent production (some sound system glitches aside), and +Margie Kleerup and I had a lovely picnic dinner with +Mary Oswell and +Stan Pedzick beforehand.

I was in a production of "Midsummer" when in college (Bottom the Weaver FTW!), so it's a show I have a great fondness for.  My only regret about last night was that Kay was under the weather and couldn't attend.  I'm thinking of sifting through the cinematic versions of the play to find one that she could watch instead.  Any suggestions?

  1. I just want to say I love the disturbed fairy's face—the one right behind Titania.

Unfortunately I can't point you towards some cinematic interpretations, I don't know any. Sorry!

  2. The fairies were a lot of fun (though this picture doesn't do them justice), each of the women carrying a small fairy puppet that was meant to be the actual fairy. It actually worked pretty well in a Kabuki kind of way.

Really, all of the cast was quite good, in all three of the plotlines (even four if you count the Theseus/Hippolyta bits separately).  Quite professionally done, and with some nice Edwardian costuming / framing.

  3. I prefer the 1968 version to the 1999 version. The 1968 is very faithful and has a frelling amazing cast, many how are now Sir’s and Dame’s.

  4. I think, @BD, that’s the version we’re watching tonight.

Diana Rigg. Helen Mirren. Judy Dench. Ian Holm. David Warner. Ian Richardson. Sebastian Shaw. Wow.

    1. 1. We watched just the first part, since Kay is still under the weather.
      2. It appears that there are two AMND RSC productions from this era. Both (I believe) include Dench as Titania, but the rest of the cast varies. There is one that involves a lot of green body makeup, a near-nude Dench, and the cast of many famous actors. That is not the one that we are ending up watching. More to follow.
