Farm Bills and Food Bills

Up front, I will say that I would rather see SNAP (Food Stamps) dealt with separately from the Farm Bill, if only because it's a lot more tidy that way.  Each requires its own separate debate, and agriculture policy should not be held hostage to socal net policy (and vice-versa).

Except, of course, sometimes that hostage taking is necessary to get any sort of action.  Hence the GOP's passage in the House of a Farm Bill that doesn't include any SNAP funding … with a promise to raise it in a separate bill later.  Which (unless they're willing to buy a pig in a poke) the Senate Democrats will refuse to pass, or only pass with SNAP funding put back in.

Since that's the contentious part of all this, a desire to deal with the matter rationally would have had the GOP passing a SNAP bill (doubtless with major cuts), and then start to work on a Farm Bill. That they went in the order they went indicates either they have no shame or simply expect that it will all get negotiated back together in committee after they've scored their political points with the "let them eat cake" crowd.

Farm Bill passes in House, without food stamp funding
Republicans plan to hold a separate vote on food stamps later this month.
