Finally watched this with the daughter this week. Both my fanboyish gushing enthusiasm and fanboyish complaints have mellowed some, but I still enjoyed myself.

I have to disagree with you, sir. Even someone who knows nothing about the history of the 'verse can see the movie and enjoy it. I had never seen Firefly before I saw Serenity. I thought the movie was great, especially the characters, and the next day I went out and bought the series on DVD. And knowing "the end" didn't lessen my enjoyment of the series. After I had seen the series and rewatched the movie, I was even more impressed with how Whedon handled the fates of the characters (even if I didn't care with how he handled the origin of the Reavers).
I'm willing to stand corrected in your special case, +James D. — and am pleased as punch that you enjoyed movie and series as well. I think it was still a barrier for most Firefly virgins, though Whedon did his best to draw in backstory for everyone.
That the crew/cast obviously had a backstory that I didn't know, but was obviously extremely well-developed, was what made me go out and buy the series.
Would that they'd had more time to develop them further …

I was curious as to how she was going to react to it, did you have to stop the film after Wash died?
Actually, no, I didn’t. She made it through both Book and Wash’s deaths without asking for a pause. (In the case of Wash, the ongoing action may have helped pull things forward.)
