Hardly shocking news on ENDA

Did anyone actually expect John Boehner or the House GOP to support a law that prohibits, as federal law, discrimination against gays?

What's only noteworthy is that it comes as the Senate seems to be solidifying to be able to bypass a threatened GOP filibuster there and pass the law.  If Boehner can provide cover for any Senators to not vote for cloture or the law itself, that's marginally less political pressure on the House and the Republicans about the matter.

Needless to say, I think the House GOP would be more than happy to, if it had the opportunity, roll back the Civil Rights Act and remove such protection for women and racial/ethnic minorities, too.  I mean, such a burden they place on businesses, and surely there's also "growing cultural acceptance" of women and blacks, etc., in the workplace.

I hope the Senate makes a positive statement here by passing ENDA, despite Boehner's comments, and makes the GOP actually act to kill it.

Financial burden??

Huffington Post:

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) affirmed on Monday morning that he would oppose a law that would prohibit discrimination against gay and lesbian workers in the workplace, citing the possibility that it would put a financial burden on businesses.

  1. Frankly, +Rick Gary, I have little idea of what Boehner actually thinks about this matter or how strongly he feels that way. I'm pretty darned sure, though, he's not going to buck most of his conservative caucus.
