Today’s winner for “Zany Comparisons” is …

If you'd enough, you'll recall "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom."  It was a great nature show back before Animal Planet and Discover and all of that.

But it also was (very clearly) a sponsored TV show, as the title indicated.  And toward the end of the show, the host, Marlin Perkins, would turn to the audience and say something like, "Just like the mother lion must hunt to provide for her cubs, so too you need to invest wisely in life insurance to provide for your family. At Mutual of Omaha …" and having made a comparison between nature and insurance purchase, he'd go into the sales pitch.

And then there are comparisons that are utterly ridiculous, e.g.,

"Well, Nelson Mandela stood up against a great injustice  And he was willing to pay a huge price for that. […] I would make the argument that we have a great injustice going on too, in this country, with an ever-increasing size of government that is taking over and controlling people’s lives, and Obamacare is front-and-center in that."

No, Rick. It's really not the same thing. It's really, really not.

  1. I'm so glad that Santorum and his ilk don't want to control our lives. It's nice that they don't tell us whom we can marry or that affordable health care coverage should be taken away from us. They're so thoughtful.
