It could still be played for a bit too much humor, but I think it should be, at least, entertaining.

Cuz, ya know, humor ISN'T entertaining.
+tjmaries Humor is a subset of entertainment. It looks like there's plenty else here to be, at least, visually entertaining, even if they get the humor level askew.
I thought the casting of John C. Riley was a bit…..odd. I'm not sure if they're going for a humor angle or just wry sarcasm. I still miss the old Guardians, though….Charlie 27, Nikki, Yondu, Vance Astro, Martinex, etc.
Trying to decide whether I should catch up on the last two GotG series so I can be somewhat familiar with the characters going in. Or else to go in more or less "cold".
Yeah, I expected that title to have far less comedic value. It still looks cool, just not what I expected.
I would assume they're playing up the humorous elements to ease potential viewers who don't know anything about GotG (like myself) into it. As we get closer, there will likely be more serious/intense trailers. Marketers are a sly species, with many tricks up their sleeves.
The recent comics (not the most recent-recent, but the run were cosmic and dark, but they also included some zany humor amidst the cancerverses and tragedies.
+Wil Hutton you may well be right (also, marketers are sometimes clueless about the films they are marketing). Though the idea of the GotG being wastrels and malcontents isn't new, and that may be what the film is playing up.
(From what I've seen, the MU canonical origins for these characters have been largely filed off, though some of that may be awaiting some big reveals — so Quill's origin, or Gamora's, are possibly going to come into play; I doubt Drax's will.)
I do like the sort of meta mockery of the rather pompous comic book titles.
It may be partly what they are doing with Quill, but I get a bit of a Green Lantern vibe here. Though it's much more appropriate of a "space slacker" theme for Peter Quill than for Hal Jordan.
+Mark Means Yeah, that would be a fun movie, too, though very retro in feel (without some serious updating). I think the modern GotG is a better call for a movie, for a variety of commercial and IP reasons, but I wouldn't mind the "old" GotG in some form someday.
