We can't seem to do away with the penny, so why don't we switch from zinc to plastic? They aren't used in vending machines so their weight could be a lot less and still serve their (extremely minor) continuing function.
While the need to guard against counterfeit coin is less than the need to guard against counterfeit bills, I wonder if plastic "coin" could have sufficient security to guard against fraud AND still have a reasonably low price.
In the case of pennies, would there even be a point to counterfeiting them? Though it would be pretty simple to stamp them with a holographic digital image and code. Much like manufacturing CDs.
LMAO!
I love the logo….. "Learning Advantage"
I guess the lesson learned is don't be a sucker…lol.
Don't the real ones cost more than face value to make these days?
+Rachel Howe you correct, since 1984 when they went to zinc. It costs about 2.5 cents per penny to make them. Our country is good at math.

Because … because … because that would be silly!
That's all I got.
And, based on the price tag on the plastic penny bag, it would be more expensive to make them from plastic!
(Yeah, yeah, retail price vs manufacturing cost and all that. Never let the facts interfere with humor!)
Oh, I'm sure they'd find a way to make plastic pennies cost more than 1 cent to manufacture.

People could have great sport counterfeiting pennies with subversive messages encoded in them. Kind of a reverse coin-collecting.
