  1. We can't seem to do away with the penny, so why don't we switch from zinc to plastic? They aren't used in vending machines so their weight could be a lot less and still serve their (extremely minor) continuing function.

  2. And, based on the price tag on the plastic penny bag, it would be more expensive to make them from plastic!

    (Yeah, yeah, retail price vs manufacturing cost and all that. Never let the facts interfere with humor!)

  3. While the need to guard against counterfeit coin is less than the need to guard against counterfeit bills, I wonder if plastic "coin" could have sufficient security to guard against fraud AND still have a reasonably low price.

  4. In the case of pennies, would there even be a point to counterfeiting them? Though it would be pretty simple to stamp them with a holographic digital image and code. Much like manufacturing CDs.
