Disney will cut financial ties to the Boy Scouts

Well, this will put some people in a froth.

Bottom line, it is certainly up to Disney to decide what groups (local or national) to contribute to, just as it is up to anyone who doesn't like their decision to decide not to contribute any further to Disney's bottom line.

For what it's worth, if Disney's corporate policy is not to discriminate against gay employees, I don't see any reason why they shouldn't extend that to the groups to which they financially contribute.

  1. I'm not a Boy Scout fan, but this is an example of corporate bullying and of "tolerance" only going one way.

For just about every life decision we make there is someone, somewhere who will disagree with it. The key is to embrace them with love, understanding that not everyone sees eye-to-eye.

Instead, we get people forcing their views down everyone else's throats.

  2. +Ryan M. Danks Disney is not calling for the banning of the Boy Scounts or their outlawry. They have decided that providing financial support to an organization that discriminates in its employee policies in a significantly different way from Disney is not something they choose to do any longer.

The same would hold true if the Boy Scouts discriminated against black Scoutmasters or Jewish Scoutmasters.

There are things that the BSA does which Disney has not commented about or has tolerated — e.g., discriminating against atheist Scoutmasters.

Put another way, Disney has X amount of money to give to worthy causes each year. Each of those decisions involves some judgment as to whether those causes are in fact worthy and if they reflect on Disney the way they want. If they can't embrace them all with love, then they need to make hard choices.

The BSA is not entitled to contributions from Disney, any more than the EFF is or the ACLU or the Girl Scouts or the American Family Association. That they decline to give to one or more of those organizations isn't a matter of forcing their views down everyone else's throats.
