After a few decades (and some spotty VHS tape issues), a DVD collection of the first season was released in 2008, when it seemed like a movie was in the offing (my review http://goo.gl/3NXHiJ). That movie prospect faded, but a new film from Sony, with Denzel Washington in the title role, is due for release this fall (http://goo.gl/wGMvYe). Pre-screenings were solid enough that a sequel is already being worked on.
Which means that the time is right for some TV releases. Unfortunately, the first out the chute is a "Best Of" disc, but there's every prospect of some season sets coming out — hopefully later this year.

Season 1 came to DVD in early 2008, back when it looked like the motion picture remake was just a year away from hitting theaters. That film got delayed…
That show was recommended to me, but I never tuned it in. What sets it apart from others in its genre?
+Scott Randel First off, Woodward, who does splendidly in the role. Second, while there's still some 80s formulaic nature to the series, it had a distinctly dark side — the Nietzschean Abyss of the past staring back up into the protagonist, as well as the darkness in the society around. The good guys generally win each weak, but not without cost. That said, third, there is a certain "justice is served" sensibility to the plots — not Charles Bronson per se, but a marginally more elegant version (again, courtesy of Woodward).
