It took nearly 40 years for the electric light bulb to substantially replace gas lights, in part because of campaigns against it by the gas companies. Which had once fought to displace oil lamps. But the stakes are much higher today.
Interesting that one barrier to using anthracite coal was the skill and special equipment needed to get it to burn. Analogous arguments are made against wind and solar power today.
