All afternoon I've been dealing with pricks

Spent about 2½ hours this afternoon trimming the deadwood around the roses in the yard, all 28 of them. Harsh winter, it seems — a lot of them are recovering from around the base, but at least five of the plants are dead, dead, dead, including the big climbing rose on the side fence.  All in all, three full trash cans of deadwood (and the ones that were fully dead I didn't even do).

A number of the Russian Sages show a lot of damage from the winter, too. But I couldn't think of a headline quite as easy about that.

  1. We’ve had the same deal – one rose bush down to a nub, the other dead, and (I realized, after you mentioned it and I went and checked) my favorite sage completely dead. Real bummer.
