The 17th Century France feels appropriately grimy, the swordplay (and pistol- and musket-play) is fun, the protags (despite all being guys with longish dark hair) are interesting, and we have enough variations from the classic "Three Musketeers" plotlines (at least as a series intro) to make the material feel fresh.
Oh, and I'm loving Peter Capaldi as Richelieu. He's ruthless and patriotic and egotistical and after the interests of France … which just happen to be his own. He's a black hat you can both boo and admire at the same time.
Definitely plan on watching more.

Richelieu is brilliant. You KNOW he wrong, but you understand why he is right.
Unfortunately he isn’t available for the second series. I think he might be ill – something to do with his Doctor…
@LH – His Doctor? Who is that?
I much prefer Richelieu (or most any villain) as someone doing wrong things for arguably right reasons.
Just some madman in a box.
