I don't know the answer for any of that (though I suspect dumbing down the game is not going to be it). It may simply be that golf, as a widely available and broadly paid sport, will simply fade out in the next three or four decades.

Never had an interest in it beyond the mini golf variety.
Money is too tight to devote to golf these days, and I don't think the sport has made an effort into making appealing to the younger generations. Tiger Woods (and a few others in his age range) made it cool again a few years back but that trend has appeared to die down. The one and only golf course in this area has cut their open days because the demand just isn't there.

Video golf is about the only golf I ever play. I remember Links 386 Pro. I tend to go with more goofy fare such as Hotshots Golf for my PS3.
