Celebrity in Perspective

An odd collection of photos of famous folks either (a) when they were a lot younger, (b) when they were a lot older, (c) when they weren't in their iconic makeup and/or outfits.

Part of it's just sort of darned interesting in terms of how publicity imagery makes a huge difference in how we see and conceive of someone. Part of it's just hilarity of seeing a young dream-boat Mark Hammill making goo-goo eyes at the camera in a desperate attempt to parlay an appearance on :Owen Marshall, Counselor at Law" into a cinematic, TV, or fashion career.

(I've been recently adding thumbnail photos to my quotations site, http://wist.info, and a related challenge is when you have someone who was famous early in their life — writing something, for example — but the more familiar pictures are very different of them when they were older and revered and, y'know, photography had been invented. So which do you choose?)

Mark Hamill was once “groovy Mark,” just another Hollywood would-be dreamboat hustling for gigs. #CrackedClassic

  1. My favorite quote from the entire article: "We mention Gandhi a lot in our articles, and I often wonder if our readers even know who he is."

This especially resonates because cracked.com is in effect "Cracked 2.0," or the reinvention of a 1970s magazine that was a copycat of MAD.

Oddly enough, the Hamill picture didn't strike me as odd, since his Star Wars character was such an innocent anyway. The more shocking picture for Hamill (at least for those who are only familiar with the Star Wars phase of his career) is the modern look of Hamill.
