I'm not quite sure the first year I went to the SDCC — the oldest badge I just turned up said 1989, but I'm pretty sure it was before then. I know it was prior to their moving to the current convention center. Alas, moving out of state in '94 sort of put the kibosh on regular attendance, but I've been back a few times since then.
Alas, with +Mary Oswell now living in Colorado, we've lost our convenient con crash pad. (Her being here more than makes up for it, though.)
I think it's great that San Diego's doing a substantial expansion to the convention center — but at some point the problem becomes not so much that there's too many people for the space, but that there too much space for a person to get through (if not to get from one place to another).

I'm pretty sure the first year we went was 1985. It's because I remember that you and Cheryl came down to San Diego and I think we went for like, Saturday.
And I don't think there were badges per se; I think there was "here's a ticket, you might have to show it again." And I think the dealer's area covered like half of Golden Hall or maybe a little more.
