Sounds like it should be something from pulp fiction, but the Synchrophasotron was actually a Soviet particle accelerator that operated 1957-2003 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchrophasotron).
Lovely chamber for a control room, though — my guess is it was originally a ball room in a hotel.
