Amendment 68 and the inextricable sin tax

The problem with "sin tax" propositions (as we can see with the existing casino towns) is that it turns a pure business proposition into a tangle of interests. If you zap the business of the existing casinos, it doesn't just affect them but all the things they fund by law.

Ditto with Amendment 68. If in the future, having a monopolistic casino near Denver becomes seen as a bad idea, getting rid of it will be tough because "think of the children" and all that school funding that will be lost.

That seems as good an idea as any to vote No.

Tracking the facts on Colorado racetrack gambling ballot issue – Denver Business Journal
Colorado voters will decide this fall whether to allow casino gambling at horse racetracks in three counties, with tax revenue going to schools. Established state casinos oppose Amendment 68. It’s unlikely that many voters will go all in on one reason to support or oppose the measure.

  1. Honestly, when I got my first pro-68 flyer, the thing that immediately turned me off of it was that "immediate donation" piece. I mean, I understand that most elections are essentially bought at this point, but… really? How stupid do they think we are?

I just hope they're wrong in their estimation.
