Dave Does the Comics – 2014 Recommendations (Marvel)

I'm listing out comic series I'm currently reading that I'd recommend people give a try.

Marvel was, for many years, my "go to" company, especially once DC went with their New 52 "Let's Make All Our Heroes Unheroic and Stories Grim 'n' Gritty" direction. Various editorial decisions and more-often-than-not misguided cross-over events have tarnished that Marvel primacy in my eyes — though I have to give Marvel some credit that, after their recent generally awful Axis event (Heroes turn evil! Villains turn good!) they are shaking things up by having some of those involved (Sabretooth and Iron Man, at least) retain their shifted alignments, and some others dance around the edges.

I still buy a lot more Marvel comics than this, but they're sort of popcorn — stuff I read and moderately enjoy without wanting to necessarily recommend to others.

Notes are attached to the images.

  1. They were in an earlier version of the list. But both of them fall into the "popcorn" category — stuff I enjoy but that aren't stuff I would actively recommend to others. I'd throw the Bendis X-titles into the same category.

I feel conflicted about Captain Marvel. I read it — and I enjoy it, but never quite as much as I feel I should.

  2. 3 issues in, I am really liking Lady Thor. Great art, an interesting story, and terrific action.

I have also liked Batgirl since it "changed" three issues ago. Babs has become Stephanie Brown with red hair, which may not have been my first choice (I would have preferred Steph). But it's still a lovely change from all the angst and serial killing brothers in the previous stories.

Noto continues to kick ass in BW – I liked seeing Matt and Laura appear recently.
