Remember when conservatives used to fulminate about what awful clothing kids wear to school and how when they were growing up young people had dress codes?
Now they're concerned that a field trip to a mosque that requires (gasp) a simple dress code is EVIL MUSLIM SHARIA DEVIL WORSHIP BURQA PAID FOR WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS!
The seventh graders only a few miles from us at Rocky Heights Middle School will be visiting (on a voluntary school trip) a Mosque, a Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and a Synogogue, as part of a world religion component of their social studies course. Students and parents were informed that there was a dress code for the trip.
"All students must wear appropriate long pants. Ankles must be covered. Girls must bring wide scarves or hooded sweatshirts for the mosque."
OH MY GOD THEY ARE FORCING AMERICAN GIRLS TO COVER THEIR HEAD IN A HOLY PLACE! IT'S 9/11 ALL OVER AGAIN!
I don't know about you, but I can remember growing up and seeing a dress code like that in my church. Well, maybe no hoodies — scarves or hats for women, instead (just like cough the Apostle Paul suggested was proper).
The idea that this is some sort of EVIL MUSLIM TAX DOLLAR IMPOSITION OF BEHEADINGS AND INDOCTRINATION would be nonsensical (thus it being in the WorldNutDaily), if there weren't local yokels giving the district grief over the whole thing. I don't know if there's been an actual "firestorm of criticism," but there was enough to get local conservative radio host Peter Boyles down there to grill the principal about the whole thing (and also forcing the district to explain that, no, this wasn't EEK! part of the EVIL COMMON CORE OBAMA MUSLIM CONSPIRACY but that the world religion curriculum was part of the state academic standards.
And don't get me started on "Islam expert" Pamela Geller's commentary on the matter. Yeesh.
Boyles, by the way, argues that "Public schools are forbidden from holding girls to different standards than boys.” Which only demonstrates that Boyles has never looked at the school district dress code.
Did I already say "Yeesh"?
Well, sure. They have to do everything they can to prevent the kids from going to a mosque and learning that the worshippers there are people just like them! That would be the beginning of the end for these people.
